I often get asked, "What's the most memorable wedding you've ever done?". Well, one couple, Jennifer and Lee, made choosing that answer easy. They had an owl fly in the rings. BOOM!
Automatically coolest wedding ever. They also had a great aesthetic to the ceremony. It was at Bear Creek Retreat and was freezing cold. So, they went with a tent and decorated it with lots of logs and moss. All very forest-chic. Jennifer adorned her dress with amazing appliqued butterflies and wore an adorable green cardigan and rubber boots (it was muddy).
But, the owl. That was the coolest part. It was named Widget and they rented it from a place called Sky Kings Falconry. Widget came with a handler and a leather glove for the best man to wear. When I said "may I please have the rings?", Widget flew from the back of the tent and landed on the best man's arm. He did a little switcheroo (they were fake rings) and pulled the real rings out of his kilt (yes, I said kilt) pocket. All very dramatic! The bird sat perched on his arm until the end of the ring portion, at which point he waved his arm and Widget flew back to her handler in the back of the wedding. SUPER MEMORABLE.
Well, I ran into Lee in the parking lot of Wheatsville a few days ago (gotta love Austin!). He told me that it was such a success that Sky Kings Falconry have decided to make it part of their services. They're going to call it "Wing Bearers". The web site isn't up yet, but if you want an owl or falcon or something like that for *your* wedding. Now you know where to go!
