It's been a busy weekend here in Austin, TX. Yesterday, I had one wedding and a funeral (minus the adorable Hugh Grant). I do have to say that when you see a ceremony done right, you realize how important it is to make the effort. The funeral was for a neighbor and I honestly feel like I got to know him better after attending. I left thinking, "What a cool guy! We should have hung out more." Perhaps this was because they played Townes Van Zandt's "Pancho and Lefty" during the service. Or, perhaps it was because they served cold Shiner Bock on a very hot day. But, I think it was really because his friends and family were allowed to speak from the heart in whatever manner they were most comfortable. The service met them where they were, and that is what I hope to do in my weddings and commitment ceremonies.
A quick car ride later and I was at Memory Lane in the Hill Country, working with Spike on a wedding. That couple will never forget me! Really! Because I'm accidentally in their wedding video trying to wrangle the Flower Girl into actually walking down the aisle. Oh well. What is it? The road to hell is paved with good intentions?
